Motion Meter
Application Sheet No.1
a low cost "Watchdog" for your pneumatic conveying system.
The HPVM5 Motion Meter detects any small velocity changes in a pneumatic conveying system.
Therefore the HPVM5 Velocity Meter becomes a very helpful instrument for preventing costly
chokes in any type of conveying system. Whether pressure or suction, dilute or dense phase
conveying the Motion Meter can handle all. Pneumatic lift as well as rotary feeder airlocks
have a tendency to surge. Many products have uneven flow pattern and variations in their
moisture content can contribute to choking a lift. To prevent costly spills and/or shut
downs the HPVM5 Motion Meter will help you to prevent any further process interruptions
caused by unstable pneumatics lifts.
A very simple way to control a "sluggish" conveying lift is by using one of the two
programmable relays of the Motion Meter to switch the feeder airlock on or off depending on
the velocity reading in the conveying lift. (Figure 1)
A much smoother conveying operation can be achieved by connecting the Motion Meter's
programmable 4-2OmA analog output to a Variable Frequency Drive. The Drive connects to the
feeder airlock motor to control RPM. Conveying velocity measured by the Motion Meter is
then used to control the rate in which material is feed into the conveying line. This
strategy allows optimal conveying velocity to be maintained regardless of changes in material
characteristics. (Figure.2)
Install the HPVM5 Motion Meter almost anywhere in the conveying system by welding a 1-1/4"
standard pipe coupling into the conveying line or by attaching the Motion Meter with a bracket
to one of the sight glasses in the lift. Both, the coupling and the bracket should both be in a
45 degree angle on the conveying line, pointing into the direction of product flow.
